Strut and Tie is an alternative modelling technique used to design reinforced concrete members.

[1] This is used when normal beam theory does not hold true. That is the plane section does not remain in plane.

[2] Strut & tie method is based on truss analogy, which essentially means to develop the STM (strut & tie model) to transfer the forces to supporting elements.

[3] Concrete deep beams, corbels and piles cap are few instances where strut and tie technique is used to solve complex stress pattern and design the member.

[4] The compression in the strut is taken by concrete whereas the reinforcement is provided in the region where ties are needed.

[5] The angle between the strut and tie should be as per geometric compatibility of the concrete member, though it generally limited between 45 ͦ to 70 ͦ.

[6] Strut and tie method is briefly explained in clause 6.5 of Eurocode EN 1992-1-1.

This is a small post on strut and tie.

Any suggestions or comments are welcomed.
