[1] The conventional method of structural design is based upon force approach.
Wherein the structure is subjected to the given set of forces and it is ensured to be within limits for stresses.
[2] Further in Force based design, structure is checked for deflections based on limits as per code provision.
[3] Whereas a performance based approach of structural analysis involves monitoring the displacement of various points in the structure.
[4] The fundamental difference is that in a force based approach you are checking stresses and in a displacement based approach you are strains & displacements.
[5] Buildings can be classified based upon the performance of the critical members as
a. Operational
b. Immediate Occupancy
c. Life safety
d. Collapse prevention
[6] FEMA -350 provides the performance evaluation criteria and approach for displacement based design.
This is a small post on performance based design. Any comments or suggestions are welcomed.
